| | | | | | | | Posted: | Dec 4, 2019-11:40 AM | | | By: | 'Lenny Bruce' Marshall(Member) | Only WILLIAMS is truly popular.* Jerry is popular too, but not on long ago, obscure titles. Folks here generally buy Goldsmith music they are familiar with- like AFO. I don't think that's actually true. I think if we are talking about *obscure* works by either composer, Goldsmith has the more rabid hardcore fans who will buy anything with his name on it. I'm willing to bet that a Williams random TV title will not sell as well as a Goldsmith random TV title. I'm willing to even bet that a Williams 60s comedy score will not sell as well as a Goldsmith 60s comedy score. But I doubt either of us has any data to back up their theory. Yavar I'm thinking about how few people responded to the THRILLER threads... | | | | | | | Posted: | Dec 4, 2019-12:55 PM | | | By: | Yavar Moradi(Member) | I might have to do a Goldsmith radio scores thread one day... If you are interested let me know your email address and I'll share the Goldsmith Odyssey's complete radio collection with you. Here's a list of what we've got, most in higher quality audio than can be found online (and a few of these aren't online anywhere): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oEoMMpjbLNU86M2okPF2tS5a3EV3LvdbUYNjoWT6kEM/edit?usp=sharing Some of his radio scores aren't much to write home about, but several of them are quite excellent, with 1489 Words being IMO one of his greatest works! I'm thinking about how few people responded to the THRILLER threads... Well those are a surprisingly rich and varied bunch of scores to digest. I would just remind you that Tadlow's first volume of Thriller sold above expectations, which is why a Volume 2 even happened! With multiple Williams AND Goldsmith scores for the show (to say nothing of several other popular composers), no WAY it only sells 100 copies. These composers carry show releases like this. Yavar I would certainly purchase a Wagon Train box set, and the same goes for Rawhide, Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, Bonanza, Riverboat, The Big Valley, classic western TV shows all! I agree Niall. All of those series would make terrific box sets. I'm surprised this has not been done. I think LLL's THE WILD WILD WEST sold out quickly. The TV westerns you mentioned had terrific scores. Maybe from LLL? Intrada? Kritzerland? SAE? Quartet? Music Box? etc. | | | | | | | | | | Posted: | Dec 4, 2019-2:34 PM | | | By: | Niall from Ireland(Member) | Naw. I'm glad he's not coming back for the series again. On a set of season three scoring, I'd not include much from this, just to make room for better material from previous episode scores. "The Tracy Sadler Story" By: Leigh Harline https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lx2mTfxNHb4 This is the only effort for the series by Harline. Highlights: 5:15 in. 27:13 in. 29:16 in. 40:09 in. 41:24 in. About 48:10 in. 51:48 in. 53:33 in. There's not as much score in this episode as others before it, so don't let the lesser amount of cited tracks fool you. And the cue after the commercial break. 29:21 in. 35:49 in. 45:27 in. 50:54 in. 54:19 in. Guest-starring Peter Lorre. "The Joshua Gilliam Story" By: Henri Rene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThG6PXTf-bA This is the final effort for the series by Rene. And according to his IMDb page, this is the second-to-last thing he scored -- he has a short scoring career. Highlights: 0:00 in. 2:00 in. 6:08 in. 17:35 in. 22:56 in. 29:00/30:01 in. Now that's how a "Witch" cooking at night should be scored. 33:51 in. 37:39 in. 44:36 in. 46:42 in. 49:40 in. Over four minutes of quiet suspense music. 54:59 in. Two episodes where the guest star is a teacher, in a row. (40:55) "Maggie Hamilton Story" Music Score: Roy Webb https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU9O1M6m08s This is not only the final effort for the series by Webb, but it's his final scoring credit according to his IMDb resume. And it wasn't death that stopped him, as he died about two decades later. No Music Department credits continuing after that either, he just plumb ended his career apparently. I'm sure somebody here knows why, 'cause there's always somebody who knows this stuff. Highlights: 0:00 in. 1:05 in. 3:40 in. 10:33 in. 13:18 in. 16:46 in. 21:50 in. 23:32 in. About 32:25 in. And the cue after the commercial break. Just over seven minutes long, both cue times combined. 41:23 in. 42:21 in. 46:10 in. 49:32 in. Just over two minutes long. 53:30 in. 54:20 in. 55:54 in. "The Jonas Murdock Story" By: Nathan Scott https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW4XQofdBOI Highlights: 0:00 in. 3:34 in. 9:40 in. 10:54 in. 13:02 in. 17:07 in. 18:28 in. 20:10 in. 23:27 in. Five minutes long. 29:30 in. 30:22 in. 31:55 in. And the cue after the commercial break. 44:05 in. 45:00 in. 48:42 in. I'll finish season three tomorrow. | | | | | | | Posted: | Jan 7, 2020-11:39 AM | | | By: | Justin Boggan(Member) |
Finishing SEASON 3: I'm having to make some corrections here. I was going by the composer credits on IMDb, and some idiot keeps submitting main original score credits to the Music Department instead of Composers where it belongs (I'm having to fix this way too often!), so it turns out composers I said in the last batch or two had done their final efforts, had NOT. I remember a year or two ago I submitted and corrected entries for "87th Precinct", completing it on IMDb for the composers. Then some idiot came in, deleted all the composer credits, and put them in the Music Department. Spent like an hour fixing that bullsh*t. Ignore the video titles -- some videos are mis-labeled. "The Amos Gibbon Story" By: Jerome Moross https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blBzBNuXiX0 Highlights: 0:00 in. 2:22 in. 10:34 in. 15:18 in. 20:55 in. 32:24 in. 56:18 in. On a set of season three scoring, I'm not sure how much of this episode score I'd include. "Trial for Murder: Part 1" By: Jerome Moross https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80Rq-AgwEVU Highlights: 0:00 in. 1:22 in. 6:15 in. 9:13 in. 16:46 in. Continues after the commercial break. 25:01 in. 32:27 in. 35:42 in. 56:36 in. I think that was every cue, unless while skimming I missed some brief pieces. Moody emotional score with solo electric cello and pronounced timpani work. All the cues can probably be arranged and edited together into a suite without it being noticeable. "Trial for Murder: Part 2" By: Jerome Moross https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYecsBZU38A Highlights: 1:51 in. 3:47 in. 43:02 in. 54:00 in. 56:46 in. Part 2 was largely unscored. "The Countess Baranof Story" By: Alexander Courage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eXTd9LGeeQ Highlights: 0:00 in. 1:29 in. 2:09 in. 5:57 in. 17:21 in. 21:28 in. 25:26 in. 27:38 in. 33:58 in. 40:00 in. 46:51 in. 51:28 in. 52:30 in. 56:45 in. On a set of season three scoring, I'm not sure how much of this episode score I'd include. "The Dick Jarvis Story" By: Jack Hayes and Leo Shuken https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMLx3hXVbIQ Highlights: 1:48 in. 3:13 in. 4:13 in. 15:10 in. Short playful material. 16:57 in. And the cue after the commercial break. 18:35 in. 22:16 in. 26:58 in. 28:04 in. 30:30 in. 37:20 in. 39:31 in. 48:20 in. 51:01/52:51 in. 54:42 in. "Dr. Swift Cloud" By: Jack Hayes and Leo Shuken https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfbZ9q1Za6M Highlights: 0:00 in. 1:32 in. Including Indian attack music. 12:13 in. 21:04 in. 43:32 in. 51:31 in. I swear I've covered this episode before; maybe earlier and it was mis-labeled. On a set of season three scoring, I'm not sure how much of this episode score I'd include. "The Luke Grant Story" By: Jack Hayes and Leo Shuken https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-swZ7HOV-c Highlights: 0:00 in. 1:38 in. 8:18 in. 11:46 in. 19:17 in. 35:15 in. 39:27 in. About 40:30 in. 44:54 in. 51:15 in. "The Charlene Brenton Story" By: Alexander Courage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5TzPFevJMQ Okay, THIS should be Courage's final effort for the series. Highlights: 0:00 in. 0:50 in. 1:38 in. 2:17 in. 9:20 in. 11:29 in. 12:55 in. 17:19 in. 21:12 in. 28:30 in. 30:05 in. 33:47 in. 34:30 in. 39:21 in. 42:53 in. 48:47 in. 49:25 in. 55:25 in. "The Sam Livingston Story" By: Leigh Harline https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ianqpqgfuQ All right, THIS should be Harline's final effort for the series. Highlights: 0:00/1:00 in. 6:27 in. 7:27 in. 9:34 in. 21:03 in. 22:50 in. 32:45 in. 44:24 in. 46:16 in. NOTE: For some reason the final episode of the season is the only episode this season to not have a composer credited ("The Shadrack Bennington Story"). | | | | | | | Posted: | Jan 8, 2020-12:17 PM | | | By: | Justin Boggan(Member) |

He did a few before this one, even! We covered "The Case of the Blushing Pearls", a superb score for Perry Mason, here on The Goldsmith Odyssey: http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/685496-episode-4-perry-mason-1959 There's even a motif that sounds like Mulan a bit. Love Jerry in far eastern mode! Looking forward to your thoughts on Jerry's second score for Wagon Train later, since it's one I'm wholly unfamiliar with!
