Prawns or shrimp (for our US friends) are an Australian summer favourite and who doesn’t love to have them with co*cktail sauce. We have developed a keto prawn co*cktail recipe so everyone can enjoy this Australian favourite for Summer. We love to serve this keto prawn co*cktail sauce at Christmas with prawns and other seafood. This co*cktail sauce recipe does not have to be limited to prawns. We have served it with fish, chicken and other seafood.

Keto Prawn co*cktail Sauce

In Australia, we LOVE prawns and it is very common to serve them at Christmas lunch. I have memories of my brothers, Dad and I peeling prawns and dipping them into co*cktail sauce at the table on Christmas day. We would make a big mess with prawn shells everywhere and Mum would have a little water bowl there for us to wash our hands in after peeling all those prawns.

We have seen co*cktail sauce when travelling in America and it is usually a more tomato based sauce. In Australia, our prawn co*cktail sauce is more cream based. We have based our keto prawn co*cktail sauce on the Australian version we know and love. It works perfectly for keto as it’s an excellent way to add fat to the lean shrimp.

Prawns and Shrimp

Shrimp and prawns are really the same thing, we just use different terms to our American friends some times. An American shrimp co*cktail sauce recipe is slightly different to the Australian style we are used to. We have ordered a shrimp co*cktail when travelling in the US and have noticed that the shrimp co*cktail sauce is a tomato based sauce. It is more like a marinara sauce and isn’t cream based.

Both types of these co*cktail sauce recipes are delicious. We just wanted to create a keto prawn co*cktail sauce that was like the version we would have with our prawns at Christmas.

If you like prawns you should check out our marinated prawns recipe which is perfect to pop on the BBQ. If we are grilling seafood or meat we also love to serve it with our smoky romesco sauce, which is a tasty dairy free alternative. Romesco sauce is a great keto option served with grilled chorizo and squid over some fresh greens.

Keto Friendly Tomato sauce

In order to make this keto prawn co*cktail sauce, you will need a keto-friendly tomato sauce. We have a few different favourite keto-friendly tomato sauces that we like to use.

For ease of access and buying we like to have the Heinz low sugar tomato sauce in the cupboard. It is easy to find at both Coles and Woolworths in the same section as the regular tomato sauce. Another option at the supermarket is the Celebrate Health tomato sauce. This one can only be found at Coles.

We also love the options available at Low Carb Emporium. Our favourite keto tomato sauce from Low Carb Emporium is the Good Sauce tomato sauce. We just love the flavour and the sweetener is monkfruit so a win win for us. Some of the other good keto tomato sauce options available are Richard’s Country Kitchen, Callowfit and Primal Kitchens.

We are so lucky in Australia now to have access to some wonderful low carb options through Low Carb Emporium and that the local supermarkets are starting to stock more and more keto friendly options. We encourage everyone to support Low Carb Emporium so that we can continue to gain access to the best low carb options available in Australia, all in one place.
